Punch Bag History
Punchbags have had a long association with fighting and fitness, going as far back to Asian martial arts, where padded surfaces were frequently used to improve ones combat skills.
There are many benefits of using punch bags. As well as increasing physical strength and one's punching technique, using punchbags can be a useful training aid in aerobic fitness, as well as the traditional. Of course, they are also great at stress relief if you picture your boss as being the bag!
What's inside a Punch Bag?
A punching bag can be filled various materials, but the most typical are populated with grains from plants, or just plain sand. Cheaper punch bags sometimes are sometimes just filled up with air or water (typically targeted for use by kids).
Punch bags are designed to take several repeated blows without deteriorating in quality, absorbing the full impact of the blows without harming the user.

Types of Punch Bag
The most common forms of punch or heavy bags are hung from ceilings, or attached to a stand. Within these categories you can find the following main types of punch bag.
- Speed Bags - aimed at boxers and also knows as Speed Ball Bags, these are great for improving a boxers overall hand-eye co-ordination, learning to shift weight effectively between two feet and perhaps most essential of all, training the boxer to keep their hands up!
- Swerve Balls - similar to speed bags but reacts to the direction in which they were struck allowing the boxer to practice their reactive movement
- Heavy Bags - heavy bags are cylindrical punchbags designed to be struck hard, mimicking body blows in real fight situations.
- Pedestal Bags - also known as tower bags, these are situated on weighted pedestals used for practicing hard hits, instead of being hung from the ceiling.
- Focus Bags - can also be termed focus bags, these light round-shaped punch bags are usually affixed to the ceiling and are used to train agility and tracking a target on the move.
- Maize Bggs - as hinted at in the name, these are a boxing training aid, filled with maize, and are used to improve head motion and defensive reactions.
